MIMIX® Technology

Access Vascular manufactures the only vascular access devices made of a proprietary, consistently hydrophilic material

  • The catheter– featuring MIMIX® technology – is made of a composite material that works in concert with the body's natural chemistry.
  • Upon hydration this material absorbs water into the surfaces of the catheter and makes the catheter consistently hydrophilic and lubricious.
  • About 55% of blood is comprised of plasma, of which 90% is water.1
  • This means the lubricious and hydrophilic catheters can be camouflaged in the body thanks to the water content.
  • The hydrophilic nature of the catheter repels protein adsorption and creates thromboresistance.2
  • This prevents the foreign body response that typically happens when a catheter is inserted.
  • This therefore helps to avoid the cascade of complications that usually follow.

Polyurethane material repels water

Build-up occurs on the polyurethane catheter

What does hydrophilic mean?

  • Hydrophilic essentially means water loving. Water is attracted to hydrophilic material.

What does hydrophobic mean?

  • Polyurethane is a hydrophobic material -this means it repels water.
  • Platelets adhere to material that is stiffer than their normal surroundings.3
  • Platelets recognize polyurethane’s tacky and rough surface as a foreign body, inciting build-up.
